Miss Kenison's 4th graders have been learning all about clouds.

Condensation is the second step in the water cycle and the step when clouds are formed. We learned about four types of clouds; cumulonimbus, cirrus, stratus, and cumulus. A cirrus cloud is a thin wispy cloud, and it is the highest cloud we learned about. Cumulonimbus is the next highest cloud we learned about, and it is fluffy, gray and makes rain and snow. Straus is the next highest cloud we learned about. A stratus clouds are light gray and cover the earth like a blanket. The lowest cloud we learned about is the white and fluffy cumulus cloud. It is the type of cloud we see shapes in. Clouds come in many shapes, sizes, colors and heights, but each type has its own characteristics.

In class we did an experiment about clouds. We put warm water in a two litter bottle. We then shook the tow liter bottle and squished it. We squished to to drop the air pressure in the bottle. After doing these steps a few times we dropped a lit match into the bottle so we could see the smoke. Then we shook and squished the bottle some more. A cloud then started to form. It was a fun and exciting experiment for all of us.

There are lots of ways to try and remember all of the names for the different types of clouds. In our class we used hand signals. There are also songs, and poems to help us remember all of these things.
