Mrs. Hillam's Class Learns About Books

Submitted by sarah.ledingham on

3rd Grade had the opportunity to have Books Art Treasure Chest come visit and share about all the different types of books that were made in ancient civilizations. Students were also able to create their own books by etching drawings into a black scratch off paper. We had a blast and learned a lot about different kinds of books!

U of U Marriott Library rare books collection sent Ms. Jazmin to share, with our 3rd grade classes, some AMAZING artifacts and facsimiles. We passed around a 3000 yr. old cuniforme cylinder, Mesopotamian clay tablet with prescription recipes, Chinese bamboo book, Mayan glif folding book, & Nigerian wooden story picture book. We learned that parchment was lamb skin stretched very thin. Paper was invented 2000 years ago, but books with out paper have been around for 5000 years! Then we made a petroglif scratch drawing to take home!
