Sixth Graders Learn about Greek

Submitted by sarah.ledingham on

Mrs. James's sixth-grade class did a social studies unit on ancient Greece. These last two weeks we were split into six different “city-states”.  The city-states were Athens, Sparta, Argos, Thebes, Corinth, and Delphi. All of the city-states would be given contests and tasks to compete for points. The table with the most points, in the end, would win.

Geometry in Fourth Grade

Submitted by sarah.ledingham on

As an extension to our beginning of the year geometry unit 4th graders were able to participate in a hands on exploration of triangles. Because these students have a basic understanding that triangles are shapes with 3 sides, they were then able to build upon that already formed knowledge. They discussed, observed, measured, and grouped triangles based on their characteristics. Within their partnerships students had fantastic discussions about side lengths as well as types angles within the shape.

Kindergarten is learning how to subtract with fun learning activities! Some of our favorite activities were pirate subtraction, ‘who took the cookie from the cookie jar?’, and speckled frogs! These activities give students a visual representation and are super fun!

Fun Friday in Third Grade

Submitted by sarah.ledingham on

Third grade enjoys a reward for completing and turning in homework on time. Each week we have a Fun Friday. These range from game days, outside games, to movies, STEM activities or in this case, cooperative learning. Creating a tower using rubber bands and drinking cups was puzzling at first. When the first group figured it out the room buzzed with excitement as everyone built the standard tower and some interesting variations. No hands! Unstacking and re-stacking, all with five or six "handles" of rubber bands. Creativity, Persistence, Focus.

Clay Animals in 2nd Grade with UVU Artist Brian Jensen

Submitted by sarah.ledingham on

When Mr. Jensen came, he taught us how to do ceramics.  If you don't know what ceramics is, it is clay that's been fired.  We went to the corral where he taught us how to make clay animals.  Then he just built the animals!  After we went back to our classes to make our own animals and Mr. Jensen went from class to class to help kids build their animals.  That is what happened when Mr. Jensen came to teach and help us build our animals.
