This year the science core for first grade changed and we have all been enjoying it!  We get to discover and experiment with different things.  This month we are learning about light and sound.   Last week, we experimented with sound and learned that  vibrations make sound and sound creates vibrations.  This week we were experimenting with light.  The students were asked to make a small lightbulb illuminate, or light up.  They could only use the supplies that were on the table.  After much discussion and trial we learned how to make a potato battery!  It worked!!  We had to use zinc nails, copper pieces, alligator clips, a small led light and of course, potatoes.  We discovered that they had to be hooked up into a pattern because copper likes electrons but zinc does not.   What a fun time!
